K95 Masks Available for NUCA Members

In times of scarcity, finding a source for important goods is a crucial member value that we can provide. The NUCA of DC Chapter is sharing a resource for KN95 face masks with all NUCA members. All industries other than healthcare have been asked to find alternatives for the N95 masks that are essential to reserve for health workers. A NUCA of DC member has connections with a vendor of KN95 masks that are good for use for construction work.

The KN95 masks are equivalent to the N95s but are a Chinese product instead of the 3M product that is approved by the US certifying authority. The KN95s are also less expensive than theN95. Orders of all quantities, large and small are possible.  Delivery time is 5-7 business days, but efforts are being made to reduce that.

JT Walsh at Anchor Construction in Washington, DC has the contact details and will work with NUCA members to get in touch with the vendor. Please contact him at [email protected].

Health Protocols

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The CDC recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask (facemasks are only needed for those who show symptoms of coronavirus).
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

NEW: NUCA Webinar: Legislative Update on COVID-19 Relief Legislation

NUCA is committed to providing our members with essential information regarding the national response to the coronavirus pandemic. The House is expected to support the proposed $2 trillion package passed by the Senate, more bills are in the works and infrastructure funding will be under consideration.

The discussion of what comprises "essential workers" also continues in federal and state executive chambers. NUCA has been pushing to keep utility contractors front and center in that conversation. In this webinar, Eben Wyman and NUCA's government relations team will provide updates on the information available and answer questions to the best of their ability about Congress' and the Administration's response to this fast moving public health and economic crisis.

Employer Guidance Related to COVID-19

Some organizations and businesses must continue to operate and teleworking for employees may not be an option. Various labor and employment laws regulate what an employer can do during this challenging time, including, but not limited to, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title VII, the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and the state and local law counterparts of these laws. NUCA Action Scales Back Damaging Paid-Leave Proposal: More Work Remains in Senate

The U.S. House scaled back their expansive paid-leave proposal following strong pressure from NUCA and other business organizations that many companies would be unable to meet obligations during this economic crisis. The new measure would force employers to offer paid leave only to employees caring for a child whose school or daycare had been closed. However, the bill (H.R. 6201) now being considered by the U.S. Senate still leaves too much liability on employers who unknowingly have an employee infected with the virus. Because the Senate is still reacting to these fast-moving events, the bill is still changing minute-by-minute. NUCA is working with our coalitions to protect our members in the final version of the bill.
